Etymology
From Medieval Latin assassinus, from Arabic hashshashin (حشاشين), meaning "hashish users," referring to a secretive sect during the Crusades. The sect, known as the Nizari Ismailis, was led by Hassan-i Sabbah and allegedly used hashish before carrying out targeted killings.
