Etymology

Formed in 1873 from the merger of three cities: Buda and Obuda on the west bank of the Danube, and Pest on the east bank. "Buda" may derive from a Slavic personal name or from a word meaning "water." "Pest" likely comes from a Slavic word meaning "furnace" or "cave."
