From Welsh Dylan, composed of dy (possibly meaning "great" or an intensive prefix) and llanw ("tide, flow") or ton ("wave"). In Welsh mythology, Dylan Eil Ton ("Dylan Son of Wave") was a deity associated with the sea. The name gained widespread popularity in the English-speaking world partly due to Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) and later American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.
