From Old French gorgias ("elegant, fashionable"), possibly derived from gorge ("throat") referring to ornate neckwear or a ruff. Alternatively, it may come from the name Gorgias, a famous Greek rhetorician known for his elaborate style. The word entered English in the 15th century.
