From Latin Lesbius, from Greek Lesbios ("of Lesbos"), referring to the Greek island of Lesbos where the poet Sappho, who wrote poems expressing love for women, lived in the 6th century BCE. The term came to be associated with female homosexuality in the late 19th century.
