Etymology

From Old French "travailler" meaning "to work, labor, toil," from Vulgar Latin "*tripaliare" (to torture), from Latin "tripalium" (instrument of torture). The sense shifted from the hardship of a journey to the journey itself. In medieval times, travel was indeed hard work and often dangerous.
