Etymology

Interestingly, "went" is not historically the past tense of "go" but of "wend" (meaning "to proceed on one's way"), from Old English "wendan" meaning "to turn, direct." Around the 15th century, "went" displaced the original past tense of "go," which was "eode" or "yede." This is an example of suppletion, where one verb adopts forms from an unrelated verb.
