Etymology

From Old English "Eoforwic," which was a folk-etymology adaptation of Latin "Eboracum" (the Roman name for the city). The Vikings later called it "Jorvik," which eventually became "York." New York was named in 1664 after the Duke of York (later James II) when the English took it from the Dutch.
